Holistic Dentistry
Holistic dentistry, also called integral dentistry, addresses oral and dental health together with body health and sees these two as an inseparable whole. According to the holistic viewpoint, a problem that affects oral health also affects other organs, and on the other hand, a disease present in an organ affects oral and dental health. Holistic dentistry takes this view as its basis and shapes and implements its treatment methods accordingly.
Diseases occurring in the body and mouth are generally developed for detectable reasons. Holistic dentistry is not only about treating existing conditions; symptoms and their causes are investigated, and the problem is examined down to its root. Treatments are carried out using the latest technological devices and equipment. Throughout this process, care is exercised to use natural tools and materials that are not harmful to the human body.
Today, dentists following and adopting the view of integral dentistry examine not only the inside of the mouths of individuals but also their general health conditions and tailor their treatment protocols accordingly.
Replacing Amalgam Fillings
The first report related to the harms of amalgam filling was published in 1841. Nevertheless, its use, almost as an only filling material, continued for years. Because, during the period when this procedure applied, there was no other alternative for restoration. Due to the harmful effects of the mercury it contains, today people tend to get their amalgam fillings removed. According to holistic dentistry point of view, mercury is accepted to be toxic, and World Health Organization identified it to be hazardous for human health regardless of its amount.
Amalgam fillings are easy to apply and long-lasting fillings, but they may lead to teeth fractures. Studies show that the reasons for some metabolic diseases are derived from amalgam fillings. Therefore, today, amalgam fillings are discontinued and substituted by white fillings. Amalgam fillings are not used in filling treatments carried out within the scope of holistic dentistry.
Removal of amalgam fillings is performed according to a certain protocol. High sensitivity should be exercised during the removal process. because swallowing or breathing the mercury contained in the filling may harm human health.
Publicly known as black filling or metal filling, amalgam filling causes an appearance that is not liked by people in aesthetic respect. Removed fillings are replaced with composite fillings called "white fillings." This material is both not a threat to human health and looks nice in aesthetic terms. They are not easily discerned as a tint very close to an individual's own teeth is found. Sometimes, ceramic fillings are preferred instead of composite fillings.
Non-Metal Fillings
Also known as composite fillings, non-metal fillings have a tint quite close to that of the person’s own teeth. Classical amalgam filling is composed of mercury and silver combined with other metals. Amalgam filling has a considerably harmful impact on human health. By applying composite restorations, decayed tissue or amalgam fillings in teeth are removed.
Non-Metal Zirconium Coatings (Zirconium Crown)
Zirconium coatings are white alloys used instead of the grey metal present in the substructure of classical metal-based crowns or dental bridges. As it is durable and, contrary to metals, resistant to oxidation, it is used in many areas other than crown bridge in dentistry. Thanks to its high light transmitting property, it can provide aesthetically satisfactory results. Zirconium coatings offer a perfect solution for individuals who have metal allergies.
Non-Metal Porcelain Fillings (Inlay – Onlay)
Also known as ceramic fillings, inlay and onlay fillings are much stronger and far superior compared to standard fillings. Aesthetically, they are closer to the original teeth in appearance. These fillings are applied to teeth that are too damaged to benefit from classical filling procedures but also too healthy to require coating. In the process of removing amalgam fillings, much substance is lost in the tooth. Therefore, its restoration by composite filling may be unlikely. For the restoration of these teeth, long-lasting ceramic fillings are used.
Ozone Therapy
Bacteria living in the mouth grow in the acidic media. Ozone helps neutralise the acidity in the mouth. Through this, harmful bacteria living in the mouth are destroyed, generating a much healthier mouth flora. Ozone is used as a supportive and supplementary element, especially in in-mouth surgeries and gum treatments. During the procedure, no injections are used; no pain is generated. A quick return to daily life after the treatment can be ensured.
Vitamin C Treatments
In dental surgery, Vitamin C is used for the purpose of supporting recovery processes. For example, venous injection of Vitamin C to an individual during the replacement of amalgam fillings helps eliminate the absorption of mercury accumulated in the body. The reason for preferring venous injection instead of oral administration is that Vitamin C reaches higher levels in the blood. Referred to as an intravenous (IV) injection, this procedure should be arranged according to the needs of the individual. Therefore, it should be carried out by specialists.
Proliferation Treatment (PRF – PRP)
This is a regenerative injection treatment that activates the natural recovery process of the body itself. In dentistry, it is used to be able to get the soft tissue recovered. Effective in bone graft and implant placement, PRP and PRF separate thrombocytes from other blood cells to start and accelerate the recovery.
Laser Implementations
Laser implementations are used for almost all treatments in dentistry. Any treatment involving both soft and solid tissues can be carried out with laser. Removing root tip cysts, widening and disinfecting root canals, gum infection treatment, cleaning decayed tissues in teeth, eliminating dentin sensitivity, lengthening teeth for aesthetic purpose by re-contouring the gum tissue, and eliminating color changes in gum occurring in connection with hyperpigmentation can be achieved successfully by laser implementations.
Ceramic Zirconium Implants
In the event a tooth needs to be pulled out, missing teeth not only have a negative impact on chewing and speaking functions but also cause a bad appearance in aesthetic respect. Implants provide satisfactory results in compensating tooth losses. In traditional dentistry, titanium metal implants are used in implantation. In holistic dentistry, on the other hand, zirconium dioxide implants are preferred. Having higher biocompatibility, zirconium implants are more durable and resistant to oxidation compared to metal implants.
